In a snow-covered woodland
A 3D Scene designed and created by UE5, embedded with a medieval Nordic game worldview
Influenced by medieval literature and history, I have a keen interest in the architecture, religious, and political changes in Europe during the Renaissance period. In 2023, I wrote a musical based on the theme of the Black Death in the Middle Ages, understanding that behind the disaster of the plague lies the evil ideology of persecution, closely associated with the Christian church attempting to reclaim power in its decline. After careful consideration, I decided to create an architectural scene set in the 16th and 17th centuries, during the “Witch Hunts” period, to convey the darker and more terrifying feeling brought by the fanatical and ambitious religious forces than the so-called “Witchcraft.” Inspired by Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, I ultimately decided to create a Viking church located in the Scandinavian region, with a long history and a grand, mysterious presence standing amidst snow and mountains. In terms of representation, I drew inspiration from the architectural style of Elden Ring, highlighting the cold and stern features of the Gothic style, symbolizing the beginning of darkness and turmoil after the Vikings converted to Christianity in the 11th century.
To construct a comprehensive world view, I added numerous details to enrich the narrative within the scene. Among them, the most prominent is the dazzling firelight emanating from inside the cathedral, symbolizing the ongoing witch burning ritual within. Large flocks of ravens swirl chaotically around the cross atop the building, foretelling ominous events. Across the graveyard lie decrepit wells and gallows, signifying the chilling secrets concealed within this frigid church. Narratively, games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and drama scripts such as The Crucible have deeply influenced me. They illustrate how an ordinary girl, a mother, or a female farmer could be arbitrarily accused and subjected to execution during the witch hunts. Through storytelling, I've heightened the scene's sense of oppression and conveyed the warning significance of this historical period through an overall atmosphere of mystery, desolation, and solemnity.
